TEDx Detroit: Andrae Townsel, 28, hopes to shake up Detroit mayoral election with new perspective

DETROIT, MI — Andrae Townsel, 28, embraces being a political outsider.

This Detroit native is running for mayor of the city in 2013 and proud of the fact he’s not part of a high-profile family or political machine that delivers handouts.

“I learned at an early age that you can be and do whatever you want,” said Townsel, one of 16 speakers at Friday’s TEDx Detroit seminar. “I’m different from anyone (in politics) you’ve seen portrayed in the media because I’m on my own.”

Townsel, a former college football player, is a third-year doctoral candidate at Howard University studying education administration policy and a variety of other subjects.

Welcome to my newly redesigned website! Knowing that you depend on insight to share innovative ideas and strengthen policy and practice, my team rebuilt this site to make it much easier to find and share resources.

In the first year of my candidacy, I continue to be inspired by the passion and dedication I see in practitioners and researchers, interest groups and policymakers, funders and advocates, all working on behalf of the citizens of Detroit.

As part of my commitment to keeping my plans easily accessible, my team have created a more navigable website with additional resources, better tools, and a new visual design to support what you desire in the areas of Education, Crime, Transportation, City Services, and Financial Stability. Stay tuned in the coming months for new plans in each of these areas. We are also adding new email updates to help you keep up to date on the latest moves my campaign make.

Young, Black, Gifted & Running For Public Office

Who says all the college educated young black men are leaving Detroit and letting it rot…

Townsel was raised on the Westside of Detroit and graduated from Cass Technical High school. He earned an athletic scholarship to Howard University in Washington, DC where he has received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Currently, he is enrolled in Howard University’s doctoral program for Educational Administration and Policy is dean of students at a prep school in Washington, DC.

As Townsel described, “I want to be Mayor of Detroit so that I may restore faith and confidence in city government. I went away to college so that I may specifically see how other cities are run. I have been preparing to serve the citizens of Detroit every since I left…”

Native Detroiter Andrae Townsel wears many hats: He’s in school to get his doctorate in education administration, works as the dean of students at a Washington D.C. public school, raps and even had a stint as a professional football player (albeit on a Canadian Football League team).

Politics don’t get any more grassroots than a scene played out in Detroit neighborhoods this weekend. Andrae Townsel hit the streets armed with a passion for Detroit, a profound disappointment in what’s happened to it and a conviction that he can fix it.

“My name is Andrae Townsel and I aspire to be the next mayor of the city of Detroit,” That was Andrae’s message to potential voters.

That’s right, Andrae Townsel launched his campaign for Detroit Mayor this weekend.
